Tree Removal in Skanör

Skanör is one of Sweden's best-preserved medieval small towns. Brick facades from the 1700s and 1800s, narrow alleys, old rows of limes and willows between lots, the grey-stone walls of the church. It is beautiful. But it is also what makes tree removal here harder than anywhere else in Vellinge kommun.

We have removed trees on multiple Skanör lots and have learned to respect what is specific to the area: small lots, close neighbours, marklov and shore protection, and mature limes that are often the garden's central figure dating back 80 years.

What makes Skanör different?

Three things set Skanör apart from other Skåne locations:

Lot size and density. The medieval centre has very small lots and tight spacing between houses. Ground felling, dropping the entire tree, is rarely possible. Sectional felling from climbing or platform is standard.

Historic buildings. The brick houses from the 1700s and 1800s are not robust. A dropped branch on a facade is not cosmetic damage, it can require substantial restoration. We plan each branch and trunk section with rigging and rope.

Mature limes and willows in 60-100 year old stands. Lime tolerates a lot but has wide, shallow root systems that can lift paving and walls. Willow grows fast but becomes internally rotten by 40-50 years.

The most common removal jobs in Skanör

Of our recent seasons in Skanör, five dominant situations stand out:

  1. Mature lime against a facade. The tree is beautiful but has grown too large for its place. Roots lift the deck, branches scrape gutters. We sectional-fell, often with climbing since the platform cannot fit through the gate.

  2. Willow with internal rot. Willow looks healthy outside but is often hollow. We have seen willows in Skanör fall on their own in calm weather. At the slightest sign of rot we recommend felling.

  3. Rowan or bird cherry planted for decoration and outgrown. Smaller jobs but often combined with pruning of other trees.

  4. Pine coming in from a neighbour's lot. Pine is uncommon in central Skanör but exists on the outskirts toward Falsterbo. Crossing branches and roots are often the reason for a removal.

  5. Diseased ash. Ash dieback has hit Skåne hard since the 2010s. Diseased ashes in Skanör gardens are common and usually need to come down.

Marklov in Skanör (Vellinge kommun)

Vellinge kommun has a detaljplan over Skanör with strict rules for felling larger trees. Practically:

  • Marklov is usually required to fell trees with a trunk circumference above 80 cm at breast height (1.3 m above ground)
  • Protected species (pine, oak, lime where marked) require marklov regardless of size
  • Shore protection applies within 100 m of the shoreline, covering parts of Skanör toward the beach, and requires dispensation from länsstyrelsen even for felling on your own lot
  • Permit-free emergency felling can occur in case of acute safety risk but requires documentation, we help with that

We check against the detaljplan and conservation register before quoting, and apply for marklov on your behalf if needed.

Sectional felling, what we almost always do in Skanör

On a Skanör lot with a brick house three metres away, neighbour five metres away and garage road four metres away, there is no room to fell straight. We then do sectional felling from climbing:

  1. The climber goes up in a harness with dual ropes (SS-EN 1891). Two anchor points always.
  2. Rigging is set up with ropes, blocks and edge protection over the buildings we want to shield.
  3. Section by section the climber cuts down the tree from above. Each piece is lowered under control on rope.
  4. Ground crew bucks, chips and stacks. Two on site minimum.
  5. Trunk sections are chipped or bucked to firewood, always with the customer consulted on how it should look.

Sectional felling of a mature lime often takes half a day to a full day. The lot is clean and tidy before we leave.

The stump on a small Skanör lot

A stump grinder is large equipment, sometimes it does not fit through Skanör's narrow gateways. We have two options:

  • Rotating stump grinder (a smaller machine) that fits through a one-metre wide gate. Sufficient for grinding to 20 cm below grade.
  • Leave the stump and drill and fill with stump-killer salt if the customer wants a softer breakdown over 2-3 years.

Always discuss with us at the quote, we find the solution that works for your specific lot.

Discreet work and respect for the neighbourhood

Skanör is not a place where you bang on through a full workday. We plan:

  • Noise window between 8-15 so the neighbour's lunch and afternoon are not affected
  • Coordination with neighbours the day before if we need a vehicle block on a narrow street
  • Contact with the municipality's street office if we need a permit for setup on public land
  • Full cleanup after the last chip pile, no sacks left on the lot

Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers to what we get asked every week. If yours is not here, just call, we are happy to help.

  1. 01Is Skanör different from Falsterbo for tree removal?
Yes and no. Both lie in Vellinge kommun and both have shore protection and marklov for larger trees. But Skanör is largely medieval with very small lots, narrow alleys and brick houses close together. That means sectional felling from climbing is almost always required, ground felling is rarely possible. Falsterbo has slightly more open lots. Both require good judgement.
  2. 02Why are limes in Skanör often removed?
Skanör's mature limes were often planted 80-120 years ago, many alongside rowan and willow. Lime is a forgiving species, it tolerates hard pruning and grows old, but the roots often lift paving and house foundations and the canopy shades out the lawn. Removal is not always the first choice, pruning lasts a long time. We give honest recommendations.
  3. 03What do you do with the stump on a tight Skanör lot?
On a small lot without room for a large stump grinder, we often settle for grinding to 15-20 cm below grade, which is enough for relawning or paving. Fully removing the stump on an inner lot is possible but more expensive and requires that we get a rotating stump grinder in. We discuss alternatives at the quote.
  4. 04Can you work discreetly for year-round neighbours?
Yes. Many Skanör houses share lots or stand close to neighbours. We schedule workdays with the shortest possible noise window (usually 8-15), cordon the area properly and account for the neighbour's parking needs if we need a street block. For larger jobs we also coordinate with the municipality's street office if we need a permit.
  5. 05What does tree removal cost in Skanör?
The small lot size and density mean most jobs are sectional. Prices from 9,000 SEK for a lime 10-12 m, up to 18,000-22,000 SEK for a mature lime or willow 15-18 m next to a house. Stump grinding 800-2,500 SEK per stump. With RUT, the labor cost is halved directly on the invoice.
