Garden Maintenance in Professorsstaden: Lund
Professorsstaden is one of Lund's most distinctive areas, a quiet pocket of early 1900s villas, mature gardens and walkable streets such as Linnégatan, Tornavägen, Sölvegatan and Tunavägen. Many of the houses were built between 1910 and 1930 for university professors and physicians, and the gardens have aged with them. Every villa is a small piece of garden history: mossed brick paths, formal beech and hornbeam hedges, perennial beds shaped by three or four owners, and apple trees that were saplings when the streetcar still ran on Tornavägen.
That kind of garden does not maintain itself, and it does not respond well to brute-force methods. It needs continuous, considered care from people who understand both modern technique and the respect older plantings demand. We have looked after gardens in Professorsstaden for several years and we know how the area works.
What makes Professorsstaden unique, and how we adapt
The area has several quirks that shape how we plan every visit.
Mature fruit trees. Many villas have 50 to 100-year-old apple and pear trees. These are the slowest-growing assets in any garden and the easiest to damage with a careless cut. We schedule fruit-tree work in the JAS period and limit each pass to a quarter of the live crown, which preserves the long-term health of trees that have already lived through a century of Lund weather.
Established formal hedges. Beech, hornbeam and yew dominate the property lines. Many hedges are 30+ years old and have a specific profile the owner wants kept. We follow the existing form rather than reshaping it, and where rejuvenation is needed (sparse base, gaps from frost damage) we work over two seasons rather than one hard pass.
Limestone and brick paths. Many early 1900s villas have limestone slabs, clinker tile or red-brick paths that are sensitive to high-pressure washing and chemical moss treatments. We use mechanical moss removal and mild detergents so the joints stay intact and the patina is preserved.
Quiet hours expected. The neighbourhood is genuinely quiet. Residents appreciate weekday daytime work and battery-powered equipment where the job allows it. Petrol blowers come out only when absolutely necessary, and even then in the middle of the day.
Narrow driveways and back gates. Several houses on Sölvegatan and Tornavägen have only narrow paths from the street to the back garden. We keep walk-behind mowers and compact battery trimmers in the fleet specifically for these properties, so we are not blocked by a 90 cm gate.
Common assignments in Professorsstaden
A few jobs come up over and over in the area.
Rejuvenating a tired beech hedge. The classic call. A 40-year-old beech hedge has lost density at the base and the owner wants it back without losing twenty years of structure. We plan two summers of gentle reduction, feed the root zone in spring and trim only in late summer to preserve the winter colour.
Crown reduction on a heritage apple tree. A 70-year-old apple shading half the lawn and dropping fruit on the neighbour's roof. We thin the crown, take out crossing branches and reduce height by no more than 25%, spread across two seasons if needed.
Spring start for a returning owner. A villa standing empty over winter that needs to be ready for spring: lawn raked, beds cleared, paths swept, hedges measured for the season's trims. Often a one-off that converts to a year-round contract by June.
Snow removal for a corner lot. Many Professorsstaden villas sit on corner lots with paths on two sides. Contract customers get automatic dispatch promptly after snowfall and we always sand the front steps as part of the visit.
Pricing and the RUT-avdrag in Professorsstaden
All our garden services in Professorsstaden are eligible for the RUT-avdrag (50% labor tax deduction). The deduction works as follows for English-speaking readers new to the system:
- The labor portion of every invoice is automatically discounted by 50%.
- The cap is 75,000 SEK per person per year, or 150,000 SEK per couple in the same household.
- We are registered for F-skatt (registered Swedish business tax), which is what makes us eligible to apply the deduction on your behalf. You do nothing, we report everything to Skatteverket.
- Material costs (soil, plants, gravel) are not RUT-eligible, but the vast majority of what we do in Professorsstaden is labor.
RUT cuts the labor cost in half directly on the invoice. For a mid-tier package the net price after the deduction is substantially lower than without RUT. More on our RUT page.

How to get started
Get in touch by phone or the contact form and we will book a site visit at a time that works for you. The inspection is free and there is no obligation. We walk the garden with you, listen to your preferences, identify specific needs (an old tree that needs intervention, a hedge that is asking for rejuvenation), photograph anything load-bearing for the quote, and send a written fixed-price quote promptly.
We never start work until you have accepted the quote in writing, and we never charge for the inspection itself. Once the contract is signed, you have a named contact who responds promptly and a fixed team that returns visit after visit.
For year-round contracts we suggest starting in March if possible, so spring cleanup catches the first growth and the season runs cleanly from there. But we are happy to take on a property mid-season as well, many Professorsstaden customers came to us in late June after the lawn got away from them.
