Hedge Trimming in Skåne
A well-trimmed hedge is the sharpest line in your garden, and one of the services where the difference between amateur and professional is most visible. We trim hedges for homes, row houses, housing associations, and businesses across all of southwest Skåne, with the right technique and timing for each hedge type. Two trims per season is usually enough to keep the shape sharp and the base dense.
Hedge types we work with
Different hedges have different needs. We have experience with:
- Thuja (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' and 'Brabant'). Skåne's most common privacy hedge. Usually trimmed once per season, in August. Doesn't tolerate cutting back into old wood, so we work carefully to avoid bare patches.
- Privet. Fast growth, benefits from two trims (June + August). Tolerates heavy cutbacks when needed.
- Beech and hornbeam. Classic ornamental hedges. Trimmed in July-August to keep the brown-bronze winter foliage handsome. Tolerates gentle rejuvenation.
- Yew (Taxus baccata). Slow, formable, tolerates even hard cutting on old wood. Trimmed once per season, ideally in June.
- Boxwood. Formal hedge and edging. Trimmed once or twice, carefully and with clean tools (we sterilize between properties to counter box blight).
- Currant, whitebeam, cherry laurel, hawthorn. Less common but encountered. We have the experience and adjust technique accordingly.
Not sure which variety you have? We identify at the site visit.
What's included in a hedge trim
- Trimming of top and both sides with battery- or petrol-powered hedge shears (chosen based on noise constraints and power access).
- Adaptation to desired shape: flat top, rounded top, trapezoid, or freeform. We recommend trapezoid for base light access.
- Careful handling near facades, fences, downpipes, and driveways. Hedges often grow against delicate surfaces that don't tolerate scuffing.
- Raking and collection of all clipping material. Nothing left on the lawn or in the beds.
- Hauling to recycling center, no extra charge.
- Visual health check of the hedge. Signs of root rot, pests, or dry foliage noted and reported.
Safety at height
Hedges over 2 meters require more than just shears. We use:
- Stepladders with stabilizing feet
- Mobile work platforms for tall, straight trims
- Personal fall-arrest harness when working above 2 m without a platform
- Cordoning off paths and driveways during work with falling-branch risk
We are registered for F-tax. In the event of any issue, the customer relationship is handled directly and responsibly.
Rejuvenation trimming: when the hedge is skewed or sparse at the base
A common question: "My hedge looks good on top but bare at the bottom, can it be saved?" Usually yes. With a planned rejuvenation over 1-2 seasons:
- Step 1 (season 1): We taper the sides and give the hedge a pronounced trapezoid shape (wider at the base, narrower at the top). This lets light reach the base shoots.
- Step 2 (season 2): We trim the top shorter than usual so the entire hedge has time to fill out on the sides.
- Step 3 (ongoing): Once the shape is restored, we maintain it with two trims per season.
Beech, hornbeam, privet, and yew handle this kind of recovery well. Thuja is more sensitive. For thuja it's often better to live with the existing shape or replace individual plants.
