Tree Removal in Falsterbo, Pines, Shore Protection and Storm Risk

The Falsterbo peninsula is a unique case for tree removal: pine forest on sand, shore protection, hard winds and Vellinge kommun marklov. Here is how we work.

Tree Removal in Falsterbo

Few places in Sweden have such a specific tree environment as the Falsterbo peninsula. The pine forest is not just beautiful scenery, it is a living part of why Falsterbo looks the way it does. At the same time, it is a place where tree removal has very specific requirements: sand foundation, hard sea wind, shore protection, marklov in Vellinge kommun, and densely built summer-villa lots that allow no mistakes.

We remove trees on the Falsterbo peninsula year-round, mostly in autumn and winter, and have learned to work with the particular conditions.

The pines, Falsterbo's signature and its risks

The dominant species is common pine, Pinus sylvestris. Large stands were planted after the sand-drift prevention work of the 1800s, others have self-regenerated. On sand, pine develops:

  • Shallow root systems. Sand does not hold moisture, but main roots spread wide rather than deep. That makes pines more storm-sensitive than you might think.
  • Risky tops. Pine shoot beetle (Tomicus piniperda) attacks older and stressed pines and causes dead top and upper crown sections.
  • Heart-rot is common in pines over 70 years old. The trunk can look healthy but be hollow inside.

We regularly see pines that need removal because they lean dangerously over houses after a stormy winter, have lost half the crown, or stand too close to a neighbour and out-compete.

Shore protection, Natura 2000 and marklov

The Falsterbo peninsula is one of Sweden's most protected natural areas. Before you fell you need to check several regulations at once:

Shore protection (Miljöbalken ch. 7, §§ 13-18)

Within 100 metres of the shoreline (and in some zones 300 m), dispensation from länsstyrelsen is required to remove trees, even on your own lot. Shore protection covers large parts of Falsterbo, especially the western and southern tip.

Natura 2000 and nature reserves

Parts of the Falsterbo peninsula belong to Natura 2000 sites (Falsterbohalvön SCI) and have their own restrictions. Within these areas, permission from länsstyrelsen is required even for felling on private lots inside the protection zone.

Marklov in Vellinge kommun

Vellinge kommun's detaljplan for Falsterbo, Skanör and Höllviken normally requires marklov for felling trees with a trunk circumference above 80 cm (measured at breast height, 1.3 m), and always for pines and oaks marked as protected on the plan map.

We check all three regulations before we put a chainsaw to the bark. If you apply yourself you risk a fine and at worst the municipality demanding replanting.

Storm risk and uprooting, common reasons for felling

Falsterbo sits in the worst corridor for Atlantic storms. Major storms have left clear marks:

  • Gudrun 2005 - 75 million cubic metres of forest fell in southern Sweden
  • Per 2007 - major damage along Skåne's west coast
  • Egon 2015 - trees over houses and roads along Skåne's coast
  • Babet 2023 - Vellinge kommun among the hardest hit by storm-surge flooding and wind-felled trees

The result is that we are often called out for pines that:

  • Lean 5-15 degrees after a stormy night (root lift, must come down)
  • Hanging branches over roofs (safety felling or section pruning)
  • Cracks in the trunk after lightning or drought years

For emergency storm and risk cases we prioritise promptly. Read more in storm in Skåne: emergency tree removal.

Sectional felling, standard in Falsterbo

Falsterbo has densely built villa lots with large trees. In most cases the tree cannot fall whole, it would hit house, gutter, line or neighbour. Then we do sectional felling:

  1. The climber goes up in a harness and rope technique (SS-EN 1891 climbing rope)
  2. Cuts the tree in sections from the top, one branch or trunk piece at a time
  3. Each section is lowered on rope with rigging blocks, under control
  4. Ground crew bucks, chips and stacks
  5. The stump is ground to 15-25 cm below grade or fully removed

Sectional felling next to a house takes longer than ground felling, but is safer and necessary on most Falsterbo lots.

What removal costs in Falsterbo

Sample prices (all before RUT):

All sample prices are before RUT. With RUT, the labor cost is halved directly on the invoice. Marklov application is included if we take the job (the municipality fee is extra).

RUT deduction on tree removal in Falsterbo

The entire labor cost is RUT-eligible, 50% off directly on the invoice:

  • Felling, climbing, sectioning
  • Haul-away and chipping from your lot
  • Stump grinding

Max 75,000 SEK per person per year. See more in RUT on tree removal 2026.

Safety, the only thing that actually counts

We do not take a felling we are not sure we can handle, neither for price nor pressure. On Falsterbo that means:

  • Notification to the grid operator when working within 4 m of a power line (free service via E.ON)
  • Cordoned work area below falling material
  • Two people on site, always
  • Fall harness and dual anchor points when climbing
  • Plan B for every section: what do we do if a branch behaves unexpectedly?

We are fully liability-insured, have F-tax registration, and partner with ETW-certified arborists for complex cases above 20 metres.

Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers to what we get asked every week. If yours is not here, just call, we are happy to help.

  1. 01Is marklov required to fell trees in Falsterbo?
Yes, in most cases. Vellinge kommun has a detaljplan with special provisions for the Falsterbo peninsula and requires marklov for trees above a certain trunk circumference, often 80 cm at breast height, and always for pines and oaks marked as protected. Large parts of the peninsula are within shore protection or Natura 2000, where dispensation from länsstyrelsen is also required. We check against the detaljplan and conservation register before we cut, and apply for permits on your behalf.
  2. 02Why are pines so commonly removed in Falsterbo?
The Falsterbo peninsula has Skåne's largest continuous pine forest (Pinus sylvestris), planted and self-regenerated on sand dunes. Pine in sand develops shallow root systems and becomes storm-sensitive after 50-70 years. Pine shoot beetle and decay are common in older pines. We often remove pines that lean against houses after storms, have dead top branches, or stand too close and compete.
  3. 03What makes the wind so harsh on trees here?
The Falsterbo peninsula sits in the worst corridor for westerly Atlantic storms in Sweden. Gudrun (2005), Per (2007), Egon (2015) and Babet (2023) have all left clear marks. When the sand under a pine root becomes saturated and wind pulls at the canopy, the root plate detaches easily, called uprooting. We always inspect lean, bark cracks and root crown before judging if a tree can stand safely.
  4. 04Can I fell trees myself in Falsterbo?
Technically yes if the tree is small and stands on open ground, but in Falsterbo it is rarely recommended. Marklov, shore protection and Natura 2000 mean you risk a fine if you are unsure. Proximity to roofs, lines and neighbours in dense areas also requires the right technique. And insurance normally does not cover damage you cause yourself with a chainsaw. Call us for a free assessment before you start.
  5. 05How fast can you respond after a storm?
For emergency storm and risk cases in Falsterbo we prioritise promptly. After major storms with many simultaneous cases existing contract customers go first. We have our own equipment and can handle most cases without waiting for a crane or skylift.
